To contain the worldwide spread of the virus, we stayed at home, reduced our private and business travels, and worked remotely, while staying connected with the help of technology. Living much more locally, but with greater global awareness \u2013 this is the concept of Glocalization, \u201cthe simultaneous occurrence of both universalizing and particularizing tendencies in contemporary social, political, and economic systems.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/glocalization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encyclop\u00e6dia Britannica<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In their highly recommendable article \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/one.aom.org\/covid-19-insights-from-business-sustainability-scholars\/paul-rauter-baumgartner-covid19-insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u2018Glocalization\u2019 in a post-COVID-19 world<\/a>\u201d, Rupert (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rupert-j-baumgartner-431b238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Rupert J. Baumgartner<\/a>) &nbsp;and his team at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sis.uni-graz.at\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Institute of Systems Sciences, Innovation and Sustainability Research at the University of Graz<\/a>, recently identified \u201cglocalization of supply chains as an opportunity for a better future that arises out of the COVID-19 crisis.\u201d Optimized resource allocation together with increased responsiveness to local needs and demands can, indeed, give us the opportunity to make our economy more resilient without losing the benefits of our globalized world. The authors also point out that the enablement of such local responsiveness on a global scale \u201crequires the capability to act upon a vast amount of real-time exchange of data,\u201d which in turn \u201cdemands the deployment of sophisticated technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, robotics, and 3D printing\u201d. Personally, I\u2019m absolutely d\u2019accord with this and am convinced that glocalization in combination with advanced technologies and digital data can indeed help us to make our economy come back stronger from COVID-19 and to become a more sustainable world.<\/p>\n<style>\/*! elementor - v3.7.8 - 02-10-2022 *\/<br \/>\n.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}<\/style>\n<h6>Globalization \u2013 risks of supply chain hubs<\/h6>\n<p>The COVID-19 crisis has shown us the risks of our connected economy, in particular, of globalized supply chains. \u201cWe have optimised these value chains purely on KPIs like profit but sometimes at the expense of long term KPIs such as sustainability and security,\u201d columnist Mark Ritzmann states in his article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eon.com\/en\/innovation\/innovation-frontline\/opinion\/covid-19-opportunity-to-explore-benefits-of-glocalisation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">COVID-19 \u2013 an opportunity to explore the benefits of glocalisation<\/a>\u201d. The continuous optimization of our economic efficiency resulted in a very few global supply chain hubs. \u201cRelying only on such a few global supply chain hubs creates significant bottlenecks in the event of a global supply chain shock, like the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, and risks substantial disruptions to the global value chain network with potentially catastrophic consequences for the world economy,\u201c Baumgartner et al. emphasize. The lack of crucial medical equipment in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic showed us how fragile our supply chains are. \u201cClearly, a change is needed to more resilient supply networks, including local production and more diverse sources,\u201c claims Ethan Goffman in his inspiring article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15487733.2020.1765678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In the wake of COVID-19, is glocalization our sustainability future?<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h6>Glocalization \u2013 efficient resource allocation<\/h6>\n<p>According to Prof. Dr. Rupert Baumgartner and his team, glocalization \u201cprovides an opportunity for balancing the trade-off between economic efficiency and resilience in the global supply chains.\u201d To become a glocalized economy, I believe, we need to shift from our current fragile just-in-time to a just-in-case mindset to ensure a longer-term resilience, based on supply chains which, in the words of Baumgartner et al., \u201care operational at a global level but are more responsive to the needs and demands of the locality in which they operate\u201d. To respond faster to changes in the local conditions, production needs to become more shockproof: \u201cGlocalization leads to a more distributed production network providing redundancies and less dependency on the globally dominant supply chain hubs,\u201d Baumgartner et al. explain. The resulting flexibility enables us to better allocate resources and increases the efficiency and resilience of our value chains. This is what constitutes a sustainable economy.<\/p>\n<h6>The role of digitalization and technology<\/h6>\n<p>The idea of Glocalization first appeared in the late 1980s, but it\u2019s today\u2019s digitalization and advanced technologies which can make this economical hybrid reality and strengthen our disrupted value chains to recover from the COVID-19 crisis. I am convinced that technology and digital data will play an important role in the transition to a fully glocalized world.
